Dramatic results like those seen on the network
television hit show Extreme Makeover have become a reality
for a single mother of four in Lexington.
A comprehensive makeover team, headed by local cosmetic dentist
Dr. J. Fred Arnold, III and plastic surgeon Dr. Henry G. Wells,
have created Lexington’s very own Project Makeover. The
team’s work culminated in 5 consecutive days of television
coverage by CBS affiliate WKYT.
“ The results of restorative dentistry and cosmetic surgery can be life
changing. We wanted to make this a community service project and also educate
people about the far-reaching benefits,” said Dr. Arnold. “And it
is not necessary to go to New York or Los Angeles to make it happen. We have
highly trained, exceptionally qualified doctors and professionals in Lexington.”
In order to achieve a multi-discipline makeover, a team of highly
qualified partners was assembled: J. Fred Arnold, III, DMD, and
Michael T. Morris, CDT of the Cosmetic Dentistry Center of Lexington,
Henry G. Wells, MD and Susan Meers, RN, MS of Wells Plastic Surgery
and Skin Care, Georgetown Community Hospital, WKYT-TV, Hair and
Now Salon & Spa, World’s Apart (wardrobe) and Promatx
(personal trainers). All live in the community, will be able
to track progress of the patient and to follow the impact on
the level of confidence and functioning. Each was willing to
donate their services to Project Makeover.
Then came the search for a candidate for Project Makeover. WKYT-TV
began soliciting applicants and required photos, video and application
with full medical history and personal interviews. From three
finalists based on need and potential, Brenda, a 42-year-old
single mother of four was selected. Her two oldest children sent
in the application. The entire makeover was offered at no cost
and Brenda was thrilled to be chosen. In the summer, Brenda began
meeting with each team member to assess Brenda’s needs
and to coordinate her treatments for optimal results.
To begin our patient’s full dental makeover, Dr. Arnold
and Brenda discussed her goals and dreams for her smile. Not
only were her teeth unsightly, Brenda was close to losing many
of her back teeth. She wanted to save them and to have a beautiful,
confident new smile.
After studying Brenda’s photographic survey, x rays, mounted
diagnostic models, and facial measurements, Dr. Arnold designed
a treatment plan for complete restoration of her smile. Her smile
design included in-office whitening, porcelain veneers, porcelain
crowns and bridges, as well as composite restorations.
Brenda’s teeth were prepared for the porcelain restorations
in one morning. Natural-looking temporary restorations were fabricated
for Brenda to wear while the porcelain restorations were being
created in our in house lab. Mike Morris CDT, AAACD then took
over in the laboratory.
Within three weeks Brenda returned to our office for the try-in
of her smile makeover. After verifying perfect fit and esthetics,
the new restorations were permanently bonded into place. Brenda
now not only has a healthy, naturally functioning mouth, she
also has a radiant new smile and the confidence to go with it.
Brenda’s sense of self has also developed with the expertise
of Dr. Wells. Her body and face make over included an upper and
lower eyelid tuck, chin liposuction, breast lift and augmentation,
tummy tuck, Botox, versapulse laser, permanent makeup on brows,
eyeliner and lips, microderm abrasion, vitamin C treatments,
laser hair removal, and Jane Iredale cosmetics.
The finishing touches were added to the project by Kim Harris
of Hair and Now Salon & Spa. Kim cut eight inches of her
hair with small layers toward her face, then colored it with
medium soft brown and copper glaze highlights. The salon also
treated Brenda to several visits to style her hair, as well as
some tanning and acrylic nails.
World’s Apart provided a new makeover wardrobe for Brenda.
They studied her new physically-fit form and recommended ways
to accent her curves. Brenda chose a lovely Eileen Fisher suit,
recently seen on Good Morning America worn by Katie Couric. A
figure flattering black day to evening dress was selected, as
were some flattering sweaters and slacks. With her new wardrobe,
Brenda looks fantastic, especially with prior help from Promatx
trainers.
